So what is the purpose of a blog? I know I have seen some of the members make blogs with "porn" passwords. Please do not discuss that here.

But, besides that. What is the point of a blog? Why use them? Do you have any good examples of blogs that are generating money?

I look at sites like http://zenhabits.net/ and I realize he's probably making five or six figures a year off his blog. But, I just don't feel like I could ever compete. So why should I even start a blog? Ideas?

Well, there are a few in my opinion.
One is obviously making money.
But for the people that actually like blogging, it probably started out because they like doing it lol. And then they realize they could monetize it.

I have never been a big blog reader, maybe it is because I am mad that they have a popular blog, i don't know.

And i already showed you a blog that makes money.

I love blogging. I blog whenever something comes to mind.

But for an IM sense, it's all autoblogging, wordpressing your CPA ads, adsense, etc.

He makes it off probably adsense as many people do, CPA is a possibility, the possibilites of IM with blogs are many.

Blogs for downloads, won't work as well as the other ideas, but yeah. You should get a basic sense of it now. If you have any questions, ask. :P

I think the main reason people blog is cause it's free and you can almost advertise or share anything you want with the world, instead of spending money on a domain, forum or such. Blog is much easier and it's pretty user-friendly.

LoL. @DogKeeper, I was thinking if I set up a blog, I would get my own domain and my own hosting and set up my blog myself so that doesn't really avoid the costs. ;-)

Thanks for the ideas. Still open for more thoughts on this though. I'm not sure what I should blog about! Then what should I do? Put up google
adsense? Hmm..

If you're making money with it, you can't use a free blog. You'll have to have hosting because no one's going to go to a blogspot/myjournal for something like that when there's a perfectly good .com service.
