Hello,
I thought about showing a tutorial.
This one's about making this kind of avatars:

Things you might need.
Photoshop
Ehthocentric Font (http://www.dafont.com/ethnocentric.font)
Step 1.
Start Photoshop and make a new image with these settings:

Step 2.
Make the background black

Step 3.
Write down your name or some other text (Make sure you use white color)

Step 4.
Select the text layer and press Layer > New > Copy via Layer

Step 5.
Make the Example copy layer invisible.
Right mouse on the original Example Layer and click 'Rasterize Type'.

Rightmouse on Example and click 'Merge Visible'

Step 7.
Select 'Background' > Image > Rotate Canvas > 90 CW

Click on Filter > Stylize > Wind...

Step 9.
Click 'Wind' and 'From the left'

Click 'Filter > Wind' 2 times.

Click 'Image > Rotate Canvas > 90 CCW'

Click 'Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur'
and put the Radius on '2,0'

Step 13.
Click 'Image > Adjustmensts > Heu/Saturation'.
And fill in these settings:

Rightmouse on 'Background' > Duplicate Layer and press OK

Make the 'Background copy' a 'Color Dodge'

Rightmouse on 'Example copy' and click 'Merge Down'

Step 17.
Now click 'Filter > Liquify' and make the fire suit to you and press OK.

Now make the 'Example copy' visible again and select 'Blending Options...'

Now click on the checkbox called 'Color Overlay' and 'Inner Glow'. Then press OK
