Thread: Have the days of buying music come to an end?

Free streaming of music (payed for by advertising) is, in my opinion, where music is heading.

Are you still buying music? Do you download or buy CDs?

    Are you a pirate?

I'm just a bit interested in how everyone gets their music.

    EDIT:

Kind of on topic, and quite funny:

Well, I'm a pirate. I download music illegaly because it costs way to much in stores, I can't afford it.
Most of my music these days come from Spotify.

I would have voted paid + streaming if I could.

I stream techno from ShoutCast most of the time. Occasionally I buy songs from mp3fiesta.com I would say mp3Fiesta is borderline because of the whole royalties dispute. But for the most part they are legit and I do pay something for the songs I get!

i was actually thinking of starting a company. We would sell music for half the price of itunes.

But there are so much free download out there. Unless you can provide a better service than iTunes

well, you can actually buy the resell rights to music on itunes for like 30 cents more. and soon all of the music there will be like that.
I think this is how the music industry is trying to save the music industry. The hope people resell the music.

Perhaps you can create a system where someone can order a song from you, and if you don't have it, your system will go purchase the automatically to sell.

For example. Say a song costs $1.00? You say it costs $0.30 more to buy the resale rights. So you decide to sell the song for $0.65 each. Two sales per song will break even, three sales will make a good profit. So someone sees your price of $0.65 is cheaper than itunes. So they buy from you. Your system of course goes and buys it from itunes for $1.30, but then you have it in your library. So the next person to buy from you makes you break even. Then the third person to buy that song would start turning a profit. Will take a while for your song database to build up. But eventually you'll have a lot of songs and profit.

This is all assuming you can set up a system that does this automatically to buy the resale rights. As well as assuming you will get enough traffic to make it worth it. It will also take a significant initial investment. Sure, you're going to be paying only half of the price up front. Perhaps you can even do like a handful of music sites do and say you have to upload $5.00 credits to start downloading. That way if they only download 2 or 3 songs to start you will be at $0.00 out of pocket so far. If they download the max songs then you will have put up $5 for their $5 (because the songs are initially twice as expensive as you are selling them for, but then you own them to resell.)

    Interesting ideas.

i dont download illegal. (i had though)

i listen to streams (techno) the whole day, we have EXCELLENT streams in germany.

if i download music for the car i am driving, i download dj sets, which is actually not illegal.

well, its already known that producers have a hard life and artists nearly only earn with concerts.
but in the "techno" scene buying music is very common cause djs like vinyls
i goes otherwise most producer couldnt effort their equipment/time

    What.cd saved my life.

And it's not "techno". "Techno" is it's own genre. Your "techno" is called edm. Electronic Dance Music.

shhhh Well I used it quite a lot to get all my songs back which I had previously bought online or on a CD. My old comp got smashed so i was like i'm not paying for it twice so... I always buy new stuff off itunes as the quality is better. Limewire Pro sux usually...(not saying that i've ever used it before  )

I've bought a "pirate" itunes gift card b4 and it was when the itunes algorithm was cracked and ppl were selling $25 gift cards for like $2.5. It worked for a while untill itunes patched it up. But now, i just use amazon cos they are quite cheap.^^
